Dear Doctor,
Thank you for the service you provide. I have tried looking but couldnt seem to find a question right on point in the doctor's forum so I thought I would ask here.
I attended a gay sauna a couple of weeks ago. I was sitting next to a person who was masturbating. I was rubbing is chest and shoulders while he was doing so. I had a popped blister on my right middle finger, approximately 4mm big.
Soon enough, the guy came and semen got onto my hands and fingers.
My query is, given it was fresh semen and there was broken skin, is there a risk of transmission at all? I asked him if I had anything to be worried about to which he replied no. But you cant discount window periods / liars / ignorance these days I suppose. I am told that HIV can become ineffective at transmission outside its host, but given it was fresh I suppose I have my doubts.
Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

You'll be fine.
I understand the rationale behind your question but there are all sorts of assumptions within the question. Even if the other guy was HIV positive - which we don't know - then we equally don't know whether he was on optimal treatment or not. If he was on optimal treatment then the very good available evidence points strongly to this not being a risk at all. If he was not on treatment then there will, at ejaculation, be "live" virus within the semen, but this, as you say, quickly loses its vitality due to temperature changes, partial drying etc etc. HIV although massively destructive in the correct environment, is not terribly hardy and does not resist even minor changes in its environment.
Then of course we come to the blister - I don't buy this as a viable route for HIV - for all practical purposes the skin underneath the blister would be intact.
I don't think any of this represents any real or credible risk to you.
